After the flow of migrants to this town decreased considerably in recent days, according to Santiago Gonzalez Reyes, director of Human Rights of the Municipality, the temporary camp, placed last week next to the Biblioavión, houses 30 people.
This population corresponds to eight families, most of them of foreign origin, mainly from Venezuela and other Latin American countries, although one of them is of Mexican origin, specifically from Michoacán.
Meanwhile, operations by authorities from the three levels of government, in addition to U.S. immigration agents, continue in the border area along the dividing line between El Paso and Ciudad Juarez.
As could be observed in this place, the surveillance has been maintained for weeks, after hundreds of migrants began to arrive to this border by train in a massive way.
The official commented that there has been a significant flow of people, so there has been no need to channel them to other spaces, and some of them already have appointments and their immigration plans.
He also mentioned that this place has been improved compared to the previous one, since it has a more complete infrastructure with showers, hot water, sinks, drainage and dormitories.
It should be recalled that a shelter for migrants had already been set up in this same place, after the camps built by the population in mobility outside the Municipal Presidency were evicted on May 25.
González Reyes mentioned that there was a considerable decrease of migrants to the city compared to previous periods, so that even the Kiki Romero shelter was at 50 percent of its capacity.
The official indicated that this temporary shelter has space for between 300 and 500 people, unlike the Kiki Romero, which has a maximum capacity of 250 people.
Gonzalez highlighted the decrease in migrant arrivals to the city compared to previous periods.
“It is true that the capacity of the shelter is greater (the temporary shelter), but we have seen a considerable decrease in the flow of people arriving in the city, especially on the trains, which is a positive change”, he said.
When asked about the repatriation program, Gonzalez Reyes pointed out that there has not been a significant flow, as well as the program consists of the Municipality offering a 50 percent discount on transportation tickets, although it only applies in the case of nationals.
The Human Rights Director added that the shelter was always conceived as a temporary space to attend to the needs of migrants in transit, therefore, as migratory flows remain stable and the arrival of people to the city decreases, the need to keep this camp set up could be reduced.
However, he did not give a specific date as to how long it will be in operation, it was reported.
