This Monday afternoon it was reported that the donkeys, bighorn sheep, goats, peacocks, among others, that were in the Parque Central were transferred to the San Jorge Recreation Center, while other species were secured by the Federal Attorney’s Office for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA).

In this regard, the Director of Ecology of the Municipality, César René Díaz Gutiérrez, made it known that the animals secured by PROFEPA cannot be moved until the conclusion of an ongoing legal proceeding.

“The donkeys and other animals currently in the Parque Central are under PROFEPA’s supervision. As municipal authorities, we are awaiting the lifting of the securing so that we can intervene directly,” he said.

Meanwhile, this afternoon, Rogelio Muñoz Sapién, in charge of the Parque Central, announced that the animals were on loan from Recreativo San Jorge, for a limited period of time.

It should be recalled that the Civil Protection Ecology Commission, headed by Councilwoman Alma Arredondo Salina, and Ecology personnel conducted several inspections during the past year, in order to evaluate the situation of the fauna in the Parque Central.

However, with the current legal process, these inspections have been temporarily suspended.

“Once the injunction is lifted, we will resume our inspections to guarantee the safety and well-being of the animals,” said Díaz Gutiérrez.

Concern for urban fauna is an increasingly relevant issue, as recently Benito the giraffe was transferred to the sanctuary “Africam Safari” in Puebla, after a nine-month struggle by activists of “Salvemos a Benito” and “Somos Su Voz” (Let’s Save Benito).

Although the situation of the rest of the animals was still latent, as these same activists documented the death of animals on several occasions, while a class action lawsuit is pending against 26 government agencies for the danger to the species and flora in the Parque Central.
