The «Michicles» is now called «Keelo»

In the midst of a day marked by violence and chaos on January 1, 2023 in Ciudad Juarez inside CERESO 3, where an armed group broke into the prison and ended in the death of 10 guards and 7 inmates, an unusual detail also captured the attention of the community: the discovery of an Egyptian cat tattooed with «Made in Mexico.»

The feline became nationally and internationally known, after he was found inside the prison, as well as belonging to members of the criminal group «Los Mexicles», which is why he was called by the community as «El Mishicles».

It has been a year since the fateful event in the Ciudad Juarez prison and 10 months since «El Mishicles» was adopted, since then he lives with a family in the city of Austin, Texas in the United States and his name is now «Keelo».

His current owners not only gave him a new name, but also a home, where he receives love and affection, as well as a companion of the same breed.

Although both are sterilized, «Keelo» has a very different life than the one he had in Ciudad Juárez.

«The kitten was given another chance. The cat looks in perfect condition, it was properly sterilized, these people have another cat just like it, but female. She got her papers there and is now a U.S. citizen. She is in the city of Austin, Texas», stated César Díaz Gutiérrez, Director of Ecology of the Municipality.

STORY OF «EL MISHICLES» (THE MISHICLES)

After the riot at CERESO 3 and after several weeks of operations, on February 8, state authorities reported the discovery of an Egyptian cat, which would be the fourth animal in custody and found inside the prison.

Three dogs, one of them large and two other small breeds, in addition to the feline, were found at the site.

In a press release, personnel from the State Public Security Secretariat (SSPE) announced that they had secured the feline, which was tattooed with symbols used by members of the criminal group «Los Mexicles».

The cat is of the breed known as Egyptian, brown in color and was found wandering among the modules inside the prison.

At the time of the seizure, police officers noticed that the animal’s fur was tattooed with several drawings, including one with the legend «Hecho en México» (Made in Mexico), which alludes to one of the criminal groups operating in the state of Chihuahua.

At that time, César René Díaz Gutiérrez, head of the Municipal Ecology Department, informed that the feline and the three dogs were kept at the Municipal Pet Rescue and Adoption Center (RAMM).

He said that he was in good health condition and without marks of violence, except for an infection in his eyes and another one in his ears, as well as two tattoos on his body, an action considered animal abuse.

NEW LIFE FOR «EL MISHICLES»

On February 21, municipal authorities opened a call for the Egyptian cat, nicknamed by the community as «El Mishicles», to be put up for adoption.

The call was open until February 28 and on March 1 it was announced that the cat was adopted by a family from Texas, whose identity was kept confidential for security reasons.

The selection of the adopter was decided this day by the members of the Ecology Commission, while the feline was in the care of the Rescate y Adopción de Mascotas del Municipio (RAMM).

A total of ten adoption applications were received, seven of them from the United States by residents of Texas, Connecticut, Maryland and New Jersey; as well as two by residents of Ciudad Juarez and the state of Oaxaca.

However, the committee unanimously determined that the cat should be delivered outside the country.

The criteria that were analyzed in each of the applications was that the person had the economic solvency to provide integral care to the feline and to guarantee a worthy space for the good development of the animal.

It was indicated that the selected person, accredited with all the requirements and the necessary space for this cat to develop, since he even has another cat of the same breed.

The day CERESO 3 changed the lives of Juarez residents

Minutes before 7 a.m. on January 1, 2023, Ciudad Juarez was rocked by a devastating riot inside the Social READAPTATION Center (CERESO) 3, which marked the beginning of a series of violent events that transformed the life of the community, at least for a few days.

That morning an armed group broke into the prison, unleashing a confrontation that resulted in the death of 10 guards and 7 inmates, as well as 15 other people injured.

This incident triggered a series of security operations inside and outside the prison. In the prison, VIP rooms and a safe were discovered, as well as an arsenal that included grenade launchers, long and short weapons, bulletproof vests, and vehicles.

During the first hours, authorities reported that at least 14 people died inside the prison after the attacks, among them 10 security officers and prison guards, as well as four persons deprived of their liberty (ppl).

Also injured were 13 people and at least 24 escaped from the prison, who took advantage of what happened to carry out actions against antagonistic groups, informed the State Attorney General’s Office in a press release.

On January 2, violence spread to the streets of the city, resulting in the death of two officers of the State Investigation Agency and five armed men.

The director of the prison was dismissed and 191 inmates were transferred to other prisons in different parts of the Mexican Republic, and elements of the Mexican Army arrived at this border to reinforce security.

The following days were marked by recapture operations, confrontations and attacks by criminal groups in different parts of the city, as several of the inmates managed to escape and were on the run.

The «public enemy number one» that month was Ernesto Alfredo Piñon de la Cruz, alias «El Neto,» who was the leader of the criminal group «Los Mexicles» and who apparently gave the order to carry out the «hit» inside the penitentiary.

Authorities also reported that «El Neto» was linked to the events of August 11, 2022, a date remembered as «Black Thursday», when 10 people lost their lives during the various attacks that took place on this border.

A year later, the city experienced a different fate. Security was reinforced days before the end of 2023, in order to avoid a similar situation.

Currently, the CERESO is in charge of the State and no relevant event occurred, however, the loss of that tragic January 1, 2023, Ciudad Juarez still remembers it.

This incident was not only an event of violence, but a catalyst that exposed the vulnerabilities of the prison system and security in the city.

Here is the chronology of events:

  • On Sunday, January 1 of this 2023, minutes before 7 a.m., an armed group entered the facilities of Cereso 3, located on Barranco Azul Street, in two vans.
  • During a confrontation inside the prison, 10 guards and 7 inmates lost their lives, and 15 other people were injured: 14 inmates and one officer.
  • An operation was launched inside the prison where 10 VIP rooms and a safe were found, 1,702,174 pesos, a 40 caliber grenade launcher, 10 long weapons inside the prison, 17 weapons outside, 5 short weapons inside the prison, 4 weapons outside, 82 cartridges, 8 vests, 4 vehicles and 84 cell phones were seized.
  • Monday, January 2nd in the city, two officers from the State Investigation Agency died during an attack on Jupiter and Valle del Sol streets, in the Canto Murano subdivision, where officers from other police forces were joined by 5 armed men wearing tactical equipment.
  • In this place, elements of the State Police located several subjects inside a Ford Fusion, in a cherry-colored Ford Fusion.
  • A joint operation was deployed in different parts of the city to prevent the escaped prisoners from leaving the border, so the bus station, the airport and the international bridges were guarded.
  • On Tuesday, January 3, Alejandro Alvarado Tellez was removed from his position as director of the Social Reinsertion Center (CERESO) 3 in Ciudad Juarez, according to the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Chihuahua.
  • During the early hours of Tuesday morning, a group of 191 people who were being held at the Social Reinsertion Center (CERESO) number 3, were transferred by plane to five CEFERESOS in different parts of the Mexican Republic.
  • At least 300 elements of the Mexican Army arrived in Ciudad Juarez during the afternoon, to join the «Operation Juarez 2023», announced the Command of the Fifth Military Zone, explained that it is a project within the framework of the «National Peace and Security Plan 2018-2024».
  • It is reported that one of the fugitive inmates tried to cross to El Paso, Texas.
  • Wednesday, January 4 The Security Cabinet meets to coordinate joint actions between the police forces of the Municipal and State Public Security Secretariats, the State Investigation Agency, the National Guard, the Citizen Public Security Secretariat and the Mexican Army.
  • Honors are paid to the 12 agents who died during the events at the Cereso and the confrontation on Jupiter and Valle del Sol streets.
  • Thursday, January 5th The State Attorney General, Roberto Fierro Duarte, announces that, during the early morning hours, between 12:30 and 12:40 agents go to a house where Ernesto Alfredo Piñón de la Cruz, alias «El Neto», was supposedly staying.
  • At the intersection of Toltecas and Tzetzales streets in the Aztecas neighborhood, two pickup trucks were located, one of which «El Neto» was traveling in, but it crashed into a gas station and began a confrontation with agents in which he was wounded.
  • Several armed men fled in another pickup truck.
  • «El Neto» died later when he was being transferred to the facilities of the Northern District Attorney’s Office.
  • An operation continues in different parts of the city, where another prisoner who escaped from Cereso 3 last Sunday, identified as Isaac Jesús Rojas Ruíz, was recaptured at 12:00 noon on Cosmopolita and Tungsteno streets, in the Luis Olague neighborhood, in possession of a portion of crystal meth and a .40 caliber pistol.
  • A woman identified as Laila Guadalupe D. H., 19 years old, was also arrested at this location. Both were taken to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
  • The events concluded at 1:38 in the morning.
  • Attacks by criminal groups are registered in different parts of the city, between 5 and 7 a.m., one of them against a convenience store, where they even crashed a car and set fire to the establishment.
  • Helicopters can be heard flying over the city, as the operation continues, with the participation of agents from all police forces.

Conmemoran a custodios caídos en motín de CERESO 3

En un acto de conmemoración, Ciudad Juárez recordó ayer a los diez policías de Seguridad y Custodia Penitenciaria que perdieron la vida en el cumplimiento de su deber durante el trágico motín del CERESO 3, el pasado 1 de enero del 2023.

La ceremonia rindió tributo a estos valientes oficiales en presencia de sus familias.

El secretario de Seguridad Pública del Estado, Gilberto Loya Chávez, destacó en su discurso la valentía y el sacrificio de estos hombres, enfatizando que su legado es un recordatorio perenne de la lucha contra el autogobierno en los penales.

“Estos hombres valientes arriesgaron todo tratando de mantener la paz y el orden dentro del Cereso. No 3, podemos olvidar nunca su sacrificio», afirmó Loya, quien también señaló los cambios realizados en la administración penitenciaria desde entonces.

En el fatídico 1 de enero del 2023 perdieron la vida los agentes de Seguridad y Custodia Penitenciaria: Abel Juárez Hernández, Édgar Omar Hernández García, Carlos Santiago Padilla Silva, Domingo Trejo Serrano, José Ausencio Pérez Puentes, Guadalupe Gámez Galán, Carlos Ernesto Salinas Bañuelos, Manuel Rodríguez Soria, Jaime Arciniega Alvarado y Víctor Hugo Rivera Meraz.

Al día siguiente, el comandante Omar Eduardo Posada Cárdenas y el agente Édgar Ramírez Ramírez de la Agencia Estatal de Investigación también perdieron la vida.

La ceremonia incluyó una guardia de honor realizada por las autoridades civiles y militares, representantes del Sistema Penitenciario y los familiares de los caídos, frente a un mural que reconoce su labor y sacrificio.

Un pase de lista simbólico, el toque del silencio y las salvas de honor marcaron momentos de profunda reflexión y respeto.

La conmemoración culminó con la develación de una placa en memoria de los fallecidos, simbolizando el respeto y el recuerdo eterno a su valor.

Loya resaltó el compromiso del estado en garantizar la seguridad y el equipamiento adecuado para los oficiales penitenciarios, reflejando un fortalecimiento en la preparación y recursos disponibles para el personal.

En el evento estuvieron presentes Óscar Ibáñez Hernández, representante del Gobierno del Estado en Ciudad Juárez; la diputada Adriana Terrazas Porras, presidenta del Congreso del Estado; el General Brigadier Jorge Alberto Buchan Martínez, comandante de la Guarnición Militar; el Cónsul de Estados Unidos en Ciudad Juárez, Erick Cohan; y Ricardo Fernández Acosta, subsecretario del Sistema Penitenciario, Preventivo y de Reinserción Social de la SSPE.

El día que el CERESO 3 cambió la vida de los juarenses

Minutos antes de las 7 de la mañana del 1 de enero del 2023, Ciudad Juárez fue sacudida por un motín devastador dentro del Centro de Readaptación Social (CERESO) 3, lo que marcó el inicio de una serie de eventos violentos que transformaron la vida de la comunidad, por lo menos algunos días.

Esa mañana un grupo armado irrumpió en el penal, desatando un enfrentamiento que resultó en la muerte de 10 custodios y 7 reclusos, así como a otras 15 personas lesionadas.

Este incidente desencadenó una serie de operativos de seguridad dentro y fuera del penal. En el reclusorio, se descubrieron habitaciones VIP y una caja fuerte, además de un arsenal que incluía lanzagranadas, armas largas y cortas, chalecos antibalas, y vehículos.

Durante las primeras horas, autoridades reportaron que dentro del penal al menos 14 personas murieron tras los ataques, entre ellas, 10 oficiales de seguridad y custodia penitenciaria, así como cuatro personas privadas de la libertad (ppl).

También resultaron lesionadas 13 personas y al menos 24 se fugaron del penal, quienes se valieron de lo ocurrido para ejecutar acciones en contra de grupos antagónicos, informó a través de un boletín de prensa la Fiscalía General del Estado.

El 2 de enero, la violencia se extendió a las calles de la ciudad, resultando en la muerte de dos oficiales de la Agencia Estatal de Investigación y cinco hombres armados.

El director del penal fue destituido y 191 reclusos trasladados a otros reclusorios en diferentes parte de la República Mexicana, así como elementos del Ejército Mexicano arribaron a esta frontera para reforzar la seguridad.

Los días siguientes estuvieron marcados por operativos de recaptura, enfrentamientos y ataques de grupos criminales en distintos puntos de la ciudad, ya que varios de los reclusos lograron escapar y se encontraban prófugos.

El «enemigo público número 1» en ese mes era Ernesto Alfredo Piñón de la Cruz, alias “El Neto”, quien fuera líder del grupo delictivo «Los Mexicles» y quien aparentemente dio la órden de realizar el «golpe» dentro del centro penitenciario.

Autoridades informaron también que “El Neto” estaba relacionado con los hechos registrados el el 11 de agosto del 2022, una fecha recordada como el “Jueves Negro”, donde 10 personas perdieron la vida durante los distintos ataques ocurridos en esta frontera.

Se filtran identidades de reos fugados del Cereso

Un año después, la ciudad vivió una suerte diferente. Se reforzó la seguridad días antes de concluyera el 2023, con el fin de evitar una situación similar.

Actualmente, el CERESO está a cargo del Estado y no se presentó ningún hecho relevante, sin embargo, la pérdida de ese trágico 1 de enero del 2023, Ciudad Juárez aún la recuerda.

Este incidente no solo fue un evento de violencia, sino un catalizador que expuso las vulnerabilidades del sistema penitenciario y de la seguridad en la ciudad.

In a commemoration ceremony, Ciudad Juarez yesterday remembered the ten Security and Prison Custody police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty during the tragic riot at CERESO 3, last January 1, 2023.

State Public Security Secretary Gilberto Loya Chavez highlighted in his speech the bravery and sacrifice of these men, emphasizing that their legacy is a perennial reminder of the fight against self-government in prisons.

«These brave men risked everything trying to maintain peace and order inside the Cereso. No 3, we can never forget their sacrifice,» said Loya, who also noted the changes made in the prison administration since then.

Loya highlighted the state’s commitment to guarantee security and adequate equipment for prison officers, reflecting a strengthening in the preparation and resources available to the staff.


Present at the event were Óscar Ibáñez Hernández, representative of the State Government in Ciudad Juárez; Congresswoman Adriana Terrazas Porras, president of the State Congress; Brigadier General Jorge Alberto Buchan Martínez, commander of the Military Garrison; the U.S. Consul in Ciudad Juárez, Erick Cohan; and Ricardo Fernández Acosta, undersecretary of the Penitentiary, Preventive and Social Reinsertion System of the SSPE.

Magia y renovación: Rituales de fin de año

Es el último día del año, un momento en que la magia y la esperanza se entrelazan en los corazones de muchos. En la Ciudad Juárez, particularmente en el Mercado Cuauhtémoc, un lugar emblemático cobra vida con una mezcla única de esoterismo y tradición.

Aquí, entre amuletos de la suerte y hierbas medicinales, Ana María Moreno, de 60 años, se convierte en la guía espiritual para aquellos que buscan renovarse con la llegada del nuevo año.

Originaria de la Ciudad de México y residente en Ciudad Juárez por más de tres décadas, regenta la Hierbería Azteca, un local donde el aroma de hierbas se mezcla con el misticismo.

En este lugar, los visitantes encuentran desde hierbas para adelgazar hasta amuletos, pasando por la lectura de cartas y trabajos espirituales especiales.

Con la sabiduría acumulada a lo largo de los años, Ana María aconseja una limpia especial antes de finalizar el 2023.

Esta ceremonia, que implica quemar hierbas en un brasero, no solo busca despedir el año viejo, sino también abrazar lo bueno y lo malo que trajo consigo.

«El 31 quemas todo lo malo y lo bueno», explica Ana, «porque también tuvimos cosas buenas». El ritual se repite el primero de enero, marcando así el inicio de un nuevo ciclo lleno de esperanza y deseos.

Para aquellos que buscan prosperidad en 2024, la mujer recomienda un baño preparado con jabón, hierbas y una loción, el cual deberá realizarse el 31 de diciembre y el 1 de enero.

«Hierve las hierbas, báñate con este jabón y enjuágate con las hierbas», aconseja, «luego aplícate la loción y pide que lo negativo salga de tu cuerpo», dice.

La protección contra la envidia y el mal de ojo es otro elemento crucial en las recomendaciones de Ana. Una pulsera de siete nudos, que debe renovarse mensualmente, junto con limpias periódicas, son esenciales para mantener la armonía.

Para atraer el dinero, sugiere llevar un borreguito en la cartera o colocarlo en una cazuela de barro con lentejas y siete monedas. El dólar de la suerte, acompañado de un billete de dos dólares, es otro amuleto que no debe faltar y que nunca se debe gastar.

En el terreno del amor, las recetas de Ana María se tornan más dulces, pues recomienda bañarse con canela, adquirir una figura de San Antonio, usar ropa interior roja y, por supuesto, encender una veladora al santo, volteándolo de cabeza hasta que el amor llegue.

Finalmente, para cumplir los 12 deseos del año, uno por mes, sugiere una canasta de 12 velas.

«Prende primero la blanca y pide tu primer deseo», instruye Ana, invitando a repetir el ritual el primer día de cada mes.

En la Hierbería Azteca, Ana María Moreno no solo vende productos; ofrece esperanza y guía en un mundo donde la envidia y las adversidades acechan.

Ana señala que es importante realizarse limpias y tener estos amuletos, ya que existe la envidia y para obtener armonía, paz, amor, salud y poder salir adelante hay que protegerse.

A través de sus rituales y amuletos, ella brinda la posibilidad de un nuevo comienzo, lleno de armonía, paz, amor y salud.

En este rincón de Ciudad Juárez, la magia se hace tangible y el nuevo año promete ser un camino de luz y protección.
