Through a press release, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) informed that they will increase their resources to process migrants in a safe and secure manner.
This is in response to an increase in incidents where migrants have been found at the southwest border, incited by smugglers peddling misinformation to take advantage of vulnerable people.
The document stated that they observed a recent resurgence of smuggling organizations moving migrants from Mexico via freight trains, so they will take additional steps to increase staffing to address this development, including in partnership with Mexican authorities.
As such, beginning at 8 a.m. (local time) this Monday, December 18, CBP’s Office of Field Operations will temporarily suspend operations at the international rail crossing bridges at Eagle Pass and El Paso, Texas, in order to redirect personnel to assist the Border Patrol in apprehending migrants.
We continue to adjust our operational plans to maximize our law enforcement efforts against those aliens who do not use legal channels or processes, such as CBP One and those who do not have a legal basis to remain in the United States,” he said.
It was reported that in Eagle Pass, vehicle processing remains suspended at Eagle Pass International Bridge 1; in San Diego, California pedestrian operations at San Ysidro Pedestrian West will be suspended.
While in Lukeville, Arizona, the Lukeville Port of Entry will remain closed, people seeking to travel are advised to check the operational status and wait times here.
